Rocky Mountain National Park 2009

We haven't been West for a few years and decided it was time to visit again. We packed up the car for a week of camping and hiking in the Rocky Mountain National Park, and headed off. We had a great time! Karen and Frank were able to join us, which added to our fun.

They're kind of like flies, but cute and land-bound. Lesson learned: you can isolate your subject from its surroundings a bit too much. Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado.
Whenever we drive West, we try ti stop at Dude's in Sidney, Nebraska, for a steak. We pulled into town on a Sunday evening this year, and the place was closed! We found a restaurant in town that served an excellent burger, though.

On the road, just east of the Wyoming border. We're heading to Cheyenne for the night. We probably could have made it to the Park but it would have been after dark, and we haven't pitched a tent in some time.

Our campsite. We stayed at the Moraine Park campground in the Rocky Mountain National Park. We had heard that the Glacier Basin campground had the best views, but that campground didn't offer reservations in 2009 because of a deadwood removal project. The views and campsites in the A loop of Moraine Park were very nice, though, and we were happy with our accommodations.
We took an early morning walk around Bear Lake. The previous day we talked with a ranger at the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center who suggested that this (and Emerald Lake as well) is a good place the watch the sun rise. The path was empty and the lake was very still. That's Flattop Mountain in the early morning sun. Lesson learned: bring a tripod.

And this is, what? It was in/part of a pine branch over our campsite. Nothing came in or out of it that we could see (insect or animal) so we figured that it was benign, at least for us.
